As we near the end of July, how will the opening of Twisters affect the Top 10 this week? Did it manage to claim the top spot? And will word of mouth have killed Longlegs or given it….well, legs? Let’s analyse the Top 10 films at the cinema this week and share the Top 3 trailers!

  1. Despicable Me 4 – £4,925,773 (BO £17,438,373)

Still here! Despite a great showing from Twisters, Despicable Me 4 holds on to the top spot for another week. I think we will be sharing this trailer until the end of the school summer holidays as it continues to rake in the cash at the box office!

    2. Twisters – £4,149,210 (first week)

The ascension of Glen Powell continues! After some great supporting roles (Top Gun: Maverick) and some breakout ones (highly recommend The HitMan on Netflix) Powell finally lands a lead role in a major summer blockbuster and it’s made £4 million in week one. Not quite enough to knock Gru and his minions off of the top but still a fantastic amount. And this is one that will hang around the top 10 for quite a few weeks. Can’t wait to see what he will do next as I for one will be buying a ticket regardless of what it is.

    3. Inside Out 2 – £1,547,817 (BO Total – £47,239,957)

Will anything knock this animated behemoth off of the Top 10? People are still flocking to see it and it’s still bringing in over £1 million a week.

    4. Longlegs – £1,309,011 (BO Total – £3,957,945)

This is pretty huge! Longlegs has made another million £ this week. I didn’t share my opinion on the film last week but to be honest, I was pretty disappointed with it. But I’ve heard others say that they thought it was amazing! And it’s that divisiveness that has created a ‘go and see for yourself to make your mind up’ buzz around this movie. And it’s box office receipts are all the better for that.

    5. A Quiet Place: Day One – £447,907 (BO Total – £9,019,395)

Talking of word of mouth, A Quiet Place: Day One has gone back up one place in the chart! I think they have been really clever with this film as there are no characters from the original in this iteration but they have created a world that can have multiple characters, multiple settings and multiple stories, all while not relying on the same characters being able to return time after time. The only other franchise I can think of that has managed to do that is Alien (and of course, we have Alien Romulus to look forward to in a few weeks time as well).

    6. Fly Me To The Moon- £191,736 (BO Total – £1,418,539

Not much happening with this film. I feel like this will find a second home on streaming and people will enjoy it. I don’t think it’s quite enough of a spectacle to get people off their couches and into the cinema.

    7. Bad Newz – £165,463 (BO Total – £165, 463)

This Indian comedy which was produced by Amazon Prime (amongst others) didn’t bring in a lot in the cinema but I wonder if it, like Fly Me to the Moon, will find it’s audience on streaming services.

    8. Blur: To The End – £147,981 (BO Total – £147,981)

Britpop legends Blur have cottoned on to the fact that some of their fans might prefer to watch their concert in the relative comfort of a cinema. rather than getting hot and sweaty in an arena. Are they trying to say that us 40+ year olds can’t handle it any more? Seriously thought, its great that in 2024 we have this kind of accessibility – not just in where we can watch concerts but the price (much cheaper than an actual concert ticket nowadays). I wish that more bands would think about that and so something similar.

    9. Bad Boys 2: Ride or Die – £140,811 – (BO Total – £11,830,375)

Will Smith continues to be a fan favourite but surely this won’t be in the Top 10 next week?

    10. Present Laughter – NT Live 2019 – £108,735 – (BO Total – £586,742))

With Andrew Scott appearing in this Noel Coward play, it’s not surprising that it is still bringing in an audience. I love that that National Theatre and other arts venues have discovered that cinema is an excellent way to expand it’s audience reach while also bringing in another revenue stream.

Things to watch out for next week….

      1. Watch the Top 10 get obliterated by the juggernaut that is Deadpool & Wolverine next week. I would bet my house on it being at the number one spot!
