Not much changing at the top of the chart this week but the Summer of Blockbusters is continuing. But with only ONE of the Top 10 being an original story (all the others are sequels, parts of franchises or re-releases), where are all the new stories coming from? Let’s take a look at our Top 10!

1.Deadpool & Wolverine – £8,021,084 (BO £33,433,823)

Nothing can stop the Deadpool & Wolverine juggernaut as it speeds towards hitting the $1 billion mark. And you certainly can’t say that Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds haven’t put in the work to promote the heck out of this film. They have been on a media blitz, everywhere you look they are there. On TV, on social media, coming through your speakers from the radio. The lucky thing is that (a) they seem to be having a really good time and (b) they are both so charismatic that, despite the sheer volume of content containing them, they are still entertaining to watch. Either one of them could have opened a movie on their own so they are definitely making the most of the double star power.

2.Despicable Me 4 – £2,561,637 (BO £30,845,824)

This Top 3 is looking suspiciously like last weeks Top 3 but I promise I didn’t just copy and paste. Just know that Despicable Me 4 is going to hang around for a long while yet. At least until the rest of the UK goes back to school in mid-September.

3.Twisters – £1,184,697 (BO £10,197,162)

Nostalgia, a Summer blockbuster feel and Glen Powell have all added up for a great run for Twisters. While D&W may have split its audience a bit, it’s still had a great showing and brought the Summer vibes back to the cinema. I don’t think it’s going to hang around for long but it would be nice to be wrong about that.

4.Inside Out 2 – £939,144 (BO £52,218,942)

I genuinely don’t think I can write much more about Inside Out 2 considering how many weeks it’s been in the Top 10. I don’t think this is disappearing any time soon. Probably at the end of the Summer holidays like DM4.

5.Harold and the Purple Crayon – £641,548 (first week)

As predicted last week, not much was around this week to threaten the top spot apart from this and as expected, it charted mid-level. A family friendly film with echoes of Penny Crayon (is anyone else old enough to remember her? The theme tune is running around my head as I type) I predict that this film will hit the million mark but then quickly dip down the chart.

6.Longlegs – £570, 543 (BO £6,825,292)

The success of Longlegs really means now that Osgood Perkins can write and direct anything he likes. He tends to stick to the horror/fantastical genre and Neon is taking fully advantage of his success as they recently shared a teaser trailer for The Monkey, his next film.

7.Spider-Man – £253,260 (2004 re-issue, one week only)

Be prepared for your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man to be appearing in this list A LOT over the coming weeks as every Spidey movie is released for one week only this Autumn. Great idea to release all of them considering they are spanning 20+ years, this allows under 30s to see the originals on the big screen as intended.

8.A Quiet Place: Day One – £101,335 (BO £29,231,766)

Still holding strong, I think this might have one week left and then it will disappear (and hopefully appear on Netflix pretty soon where it will find a whole new audience).

9.BlackPink World Tour – £93,518 (BO £181,095)

I am middle aged so know nothing about BlackPink. What I do know is that I love when bands release their concerts. I went to see the Taylor Swift Eras tour in the cinema and it was the next best thing to being there. To all the bands out there – this is a GOOD IDEA!

10.My Neighbour Totoro – £69,995 (first week)

Lovely to see this on the big screen, hopefully it will introduce a lot of new kids (and grown ups) to Studio Ghibli. The film is regularly recognised as one of the greatest films ever made.

Things to look out for next week….

  1. Expect it to be a Reynolds/Lively head-to-head as Blake Lively unleashes the power of BookTok on to the big screen with her adaptation of the smash hit book It Ends With Us. I’m going all in and I’ll put money on it being at Number One this time next week.
  2. M.Night Shayamalan’s new film, Trap, is also out next week and I would expect this to hit the Top 10 about mid-level. The trailer looks good but I worry that it’s given away too much of the story.
